In 2018 I heard about the discovery of a subglacial lake on Mars, and I almost immediately started building a full-scale rover in a car shelter at my house. The idea was this: maybe I could figure out how to mount a new type of drill to the rover.

Five years later, the rover is in my shed, and my novel borebots drilling technology – originally a failed citizen science project – is in the NASA technology pipeline as a NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) Phase I study.
